Compass Academics
Helping Students Chart their Course
One on one academic coaching and subject specific tutoring for elementary through high school students. Personalized support that helps students feel confident, organized, and ready to tackle their schoolwork with less stress.
At Compass Academics, the goal is simple: help students feel capable, confident, and supported so they can navigate school with more ease.
Julia Shealy has been tutoring since high school and has taught at almost every level since then. After many years in the classroom, she realized how much she loved working with students one-on-one and getting to know who they are as learners. She enjoys learning what makes them tick, how they like to learn, and how to meet them right where they are.
She works well with a wide range of students and loves the variety—whether it's helping with study skills, supporting a middle schooler through a tough week, guiding a high school student through writing and reading, or helping a student map out a plan for college.
Her background includes a B.A. in French from Davidson College (where she also earned her teaching certification) and a master's degree in Romance Languages from the University of Georgia. She has over 22 years of classroom experience in public schools, private schools, at the university level, and abroad. She has also worked closely with executive functioning coaches and has a solid understanding of how those skills support learning.
Outside of tutoring, she lives in Mt. Pleasant with her husband, two almost-grown sons, a labradoodle, and a Maine Coon. She loves good food, photography, reading, art, travel, and time at Edisto.

How Sessions Work
➤ Sessions are offered both in person and virtually. Most sessions are between 45 minutes and one hour.
➤ A typical session includes a quick check-in about how the week is going, what's working, and what's not. Together, they set a goal for the session, get to work on whatever is most pressing, and wrap up by talking about next steps and goals for the coming week.
➤ Sessions happen at a set weekly time and stick with it unless something comes up.
How Sessions Work
➤ During the first session, time is spent getting to know your child and learning about their personality, interests, strengths, and any challenges they might be facing. Parents will receive an intake form to share what they hope their child will gain from tutoring or coaching.
➤ After each session, a short email summary is sent outlining what was covered and what comes next.
